Mamma Mia: A ‘quaint, cozy’ Italian restaurant
Looking for a place to have great food and a good time? OU News Bureau reporters have visited some distinctive eateries in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to learn more about what these places have to offer. Reporter Shelby Tankersley visited Mamma Mia in Rochester and spoke with manager Renee Alexander.
Tell me about the history of this place.
We opened Mamma Mia in November of 2012 as an Italian restaurant, and we’ve been open right at this location ever since.
Describe what you offer your patrons.
I would say the best thing we offer is our outdoor seating, which doesn’t apply when it’s cold. But it’s so beautiful. That’s one of our best features.
Why would someone want to come here?
We have very good food that is very consistent. So if you get something this week that you like, you’re going to get the same thing the week after. We also have great service and, of course, the view. We’re quaint and cozy, which is very friendly to customers.
What do you offer that’s different from other places?
We are upscale on a family budget. Our prices are comparable with chain Italian restaurants. We’re not high end but very classy on the inside. You can come here and not feel underdressed or overdressed.
What’s the one thing everyone should order here?
Our chicken Marsala is a big seller. And the five cheese lasagna is also great. And our best dessert is a homemade tiramisu.
How many people work here?
We have our full-time chef and our cook. We also have one dishwasher and four staff members who work the front, which adds up to less than 10. People get to know who their server is.
What does the future hold for this place?
We just expanded a banquet room. It seats up to 140 people. It’s good for people who don’t have a big place to go to. We also hold a lot of private parties. That part of our business has done really well.
Mamma Mia is at 543 Main Street, Suite 311, Rochester, MI 48307. (248) 402-0234.
