Looking for a place to have great food and a good time? OU News Bureau reporters have visited some distinctive eateries in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to learn more about what these places have to offer. Reporter Aj Kajy visited Stadium Market in Ann Arbor and spoke with co-owner Vernon George.

Tell me about the history of this place.
It has been almost 12 years now we’ve been open here at Stadium Market. My brother (Victor) and I actually owned a different store just a couple miles down the street from here. It was much smaller and the kitchen was nonexistent, and it was difficult for me to do the carryout I do now here, there. We moved over here, and brother took the control of the store part, and I run the kitchen here.

Describe what it offers patrons.
Anything any other restaurant can offer them. People walk in and think we are just a really nice store, but once they try our food they keep coming back. Our pizza and Stromboli’s are made from scratch, and we offer the best gluten free options around. Oh, I can’t forget our deli, we make every sandwich and wrap you could think of, including handmade breakfast sandwiches. Plus, we cater to your needs no matter how large of a party you are.

Why would someone want to come here?
The University of Michigan and the city of Ann Arbor come here. I make all the meals for the Wolverines swim teams, both men and women. I even make the meals for Ann Arbor police on football game days. Stadium Market is a well-known place, and the food speaks for itself.

What do you do that’s different from other places like this?
We’re a small independent establishment that will not make your food until you order it. Our pizza isn’t a scientific formula. We make it how the customer wants. Our sub ingredients don’t sit out all day, they’re waiting for you to order them. We do offer ready-made options and those for the people who do not have time wait for their meal to cook.

What’s the one thing everyone should order here?
The Stromboli’s are the favorite around here, but our gluten-pizza is called the best around. John Beilein, the basketball coach, orders it for his wife all the time.

How many people work here?
It’s a game day Saturday so we have five here, mainly just keeping up with the orders we have coming in.

What does the future hold for this place?
You’re looking at it. I’ll be in this kitchen, and my brother will behind the store counter. My son is here right now, and maybe one day he’ll take the kitchen over, but for now what you see is the future of Stadium Market.

Stadium Market is at 1423 E Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor, Mich. 48104. (734) 761-9650.
