Cool Jacks: Creative ice cream sandwiches

Looking for a place to have great food and a good time? OU News Bureau reporters have visited some distinctive eateries in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to learn more about what these places have to offer. Reporter Jacklynn Ray visited Cool Jacks in Oakland County’s Sylvan Lake and spoke with owner Josh Charlip.

What is the history of this place?
Cool Jacks started six years ago. The original name of the company was “Eskimo Jacks, famous ice cream sandwiches.” The company was named after my 65-pound Labradoodle, Jackson. The original cartoon image was of him in a parka. The problem was everyone thought it was a dog treat company, so we changed the name to “Cool Jacks” and changed the logo. Over six years where we had started with one cart and we would do events, we now have three carts, an ice cream truck, we have this store, we handcraft all our own ice cream and cookies and we do hundreds of events a year.

Describe the products that you offer.
My goal six years ago was to bring ice cream sandwiches to the area. No one was really doing them. So, I had a cookie recipe and when we first started we were using a different brand of ice cream. About three years ago I said, “You know what, I want to make my own ice cream,” so we found dairy on the west side of the state and that’s where we get our mix from. Now, we make all our own ice cream here and all our ingredients are from scratch and all our cookies are from scratch as well.

Why would someone want to come here?
A couple things that set us apart is the fact we make ice cream sandwiches. You can come in and choose any two cookies, a flavor of ice cream, or any two different cookies and we’ll make you a sandwich. Not too many places do that. You can also come in and just get ice cream in a cup or a cone if you wanted.

What do you do different from other similar places?
The fact that we use premium local products in our ice cream and cookies is something that sets us apart.

What’s the one thing everyone should order here?
Personally, my favorite ice cream is the cappuccino chip, so you could get that on a s’mores cookie. One of the other things I enjoy doing is mixing two different flavors of ice cream, for instance, chocolate and mint or toasted coconut and chocolate are good. But I recommend being creative because that’s one of the unique things you can do by coming in here.

How many people work here?
During the main season, April through September, where we’re going out and doing events all over the city, we’ll probably have 15-20 almost full-time staff. Once it slows down we go down to about five to seven full- and part-time employees.

What does the future hold?
I love doing this business. I started it from scratch. I would love to continue growing the event side, double the amount of events that we do and maybe expand in other Midwestern cities, branching out to Cleveland or Columbus.

Cool Jacks is at 2530 Orchard Lake Road in Sylvan Lake, Michigan (248) 706-6045.
