Looking for a place to have great food and a good time? OU News Bureau reporters have visited some distinctive eateries in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to learn more about what these places have to offer. Reporter Xavier Hershovitz visited the Oakland Diner in Pontiac and spoke with the owner’s wife, Tina Tinaj, and her son Joe Tinaj.

Describe what it offers patrons.
Tina:
We try to make customers feel comfortable. I want customers to leave happy, when they are happy, we are happy. I want this to be a happy place. If I see people, here not happy, it ruins my day, it honestly does.

Why would someone want to come here?
Tina:
I always hear we are one of the cleanest places.
Joe:
She ran a cleaning business for 14 years, and it is our priority to make sure everything is clean.
Tina:
The food is good. It’s excellent, big portions and the service is so wonderful. We used to close at 4 p.m., and so many people asked us to stay open. So we did, and it’s really paying off.

What do you do that’s different from other places like this?
Tina:
This place is a happy place — so many windows, so much light. A lot of people say this is the best place around here. There are also so many options on the menu. There is food for anyone. We also have a lot of specials, senior specials.

What’s the one thing everyone should order here?
Tina:
Depends. The Oakland Special (three eggs, bacon, sausage, slice of ham, hashbrowns or pancakes, and toast) is good for breakfast. I like the corn beef sandwich for lunch. For dinner, the surf and turf. You cannot go wrong with that. We sell so many salads, too.
Joe:
The most popular is the strawberry chicken salad. That one sells the most.

What does the future hold for this place?
Tina:
I see a bright future. We have been here a year, and we are doing awesome.
Joe:
We just want to continue making people happy, see people leaving with a good experience.
Tina:
Already after a year, we have not just customers but clients who come see us almost every day.

The Oakland Diner is at 940 Joslyn Road in Pontiac, Michigan. 48340 (248) 253-1112.
