Gar’s: A burger and a boomba

Looking for a place to have great food and a good time? OU News Bureau reporters have visited some distinctive eateries in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to learn more about what these places have to offer. Reporter Konstantina Buhalis visited Gar’s Lounge in Marine City, Michigan, and spoke with Penny Garwood.

Tell us about the history of this place.
Tom Garwood bought this place, it’s been close to 40 years now. I can’t tell you the exact date, it was ’76 or ’78.

Describe what this place offers patrons?
First of all, we get our meat fresh. The hamburger we use is fresh daily, it’s never frozen. We get our meat from Zimmerman’s market, right over here. We’ve been getting it from them for 40 years.

Why would someone want to come here?
I think the food for one, to get a good bar burger-a good fresh bar burger. The atmosphere, everyone is friendly. It’s a ma-and-pa place.

What makes it different than the other bars?
The 32 oz. boomba that’s been here since I can remember. The boomba’s are awesome.

What is the one menu item someone needs to try when they come here?
The burger, definitely the burger.

What do you think the future holds?
I don’t know, we’re just trying to keep everything the same. People like to come back and notice nothing’s changed. When you come back, there will be the same picnic table with your name scratched in it.

Gar’s Lounge is at 142 S. Water St., Marine City, Michigan 48039 (810-7654692)
