Looking for a place to have great food and a good time? OU News Bureau reporters have visited some distinctive eateries in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to learn more about what these places have to offer. Reporter Hannah Knoop visited Street Sweets in Sterling Heights and spoke with owner Andrew Kattula.

Tell me about the history of this place.
This business was purchased on August 2nd, 2017. I just took over an existing bakery. Prior to this, it was called Sugar Babies. They made baklava, birthday cakes and event cakes. So, I came in here, got a good deal and bought it that day.
I looked around and thought, what else could we do here to make it more unique and separate it from other bakeries? So, I decided to take a Mediterranean/American fusion idea and brought in more American pastries, including the dessert pizza. We wanted to keep the same people coming in from the existing bakery, just see a nicer store front and add product like the liquid nitrogen ice cream, the dessert pizza, donuts, coffee and espresso to give a new wave of people coming in. And the new wave of people can look at the Mediterranean desserts and say, “What is this?” And the same for the older customers with the American food. I just tried to create the most unique concept of a bakery that I could.

Describe what it offers patrons.
We serve cakes, wedding cakes, birthday cakes, etc. We serve traditional Mediterranean sweets, typical sweets that you see overseas, baklava, specifically. We have coffee and espresso brewed from Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company. We have our own liquid nitrogen ice cream that we make in-house out of normal butter fat cream, and we also have gluten and dairy-free options. We have our dessert pizzas that we make our own dough, gluten and dairy free options, as well, and donuts, some cake donuts and some yeast.

Why would someone want to come here?
Because of our traditional Mediterranean desserts and our amazing twist on our ice cream and fun, unique desserts.

What do you do that’s different from other places like this?
The warm, modern store front is a big thing, sitting down and having a comfortable environment. And the biggest thing that we do differently is the dairy-free ice cream and the dairy-free/gluten-free dessert pizzas. I don’t know anyone in Michigan who does a dairy-free/gluten-free dessert pizza. Those two products can be customized, as well. So, if you don’t like anything that we have to offer, you can build your own with over 30 toppings to choose from.

What’s the one thing everyone should order here?
The dessert pizza.

How many people work here?
Fifteen total employees work here.

What does the future hold for this place?
Expanding. We are going to expand and have many locations. The next stop would be Royal Oak or Detroit because of the diversity and culture. And I would like to look into Shelby Township just because I have another business out there and they don’t have a pastry shop like this.
