Looking for a place to have great food and a good time? OU News Bureau reporters have visited some distinctive eateries in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to learn more about what these places have to offer. Reporter Matthew E. Semrau visited Zanie Janie’s Simply Coffee in Holly, Michigan, and spoke with owner Jane Slagell.

Tell me about the history of this place.
My history here at Zanie Janie’s dates back just five years ago. It’s just about my anniversary.

Describe what it offers patrons.
Fresh-roasted coffee. I roast three to five times a week. I’m only here five days, so that’s a lot in a week. It’s a roasting house. A little micro-roastery. I roast coffee from all over the world. I get the best beans and do the best I can for my customers. Beans by the pound. I brew coffee every day for the people who come in here and want to enjoy fresh-roasted coffee.

Why would someone want to come here?
It’s a very friendly, wonderful place. It’s a place where you sit and sip and enjoy people’s company. You know, we have puzzles on the other side [of the cafe]. It’s more like a real, community kind of place. I try to do the most excellent drinks, and the coffee, and everything, at a good, fair price.

What do you do that’s different from other places like this?
Well, most places are just a coffee shop. They buy their coffee from somewhere else, where I actually roast. I get all the beans green from all over the world, and I roast here. And I become friends with the people. And that’s real different. I don’t just serve a drink and say, “Have a good day.” I really care about the people that come in here, you know. You develop friendships.

What’s the one thing everyone should order here?
There are several things that people love. The Salted Caramel Cappuccino. I also have the Minty Mailman Mocha, which is really fun because it was actually named after our mailman here in Holly. He wanted a drink named after himself. And, it’s made with a crème de menthe instead of peppermint, so it’s a pretty nice [drink].

How many people work here?
It’s only me. It’s actually my hobby here. It’s a God-given place for me to care and share for people. It really is my ministry.

What does the future hold for this place?
Only God knows. He holds the future. So, I just go season by season.
